Lameness exams are an important part of maintaining soundness in performance horses. A lameness evaluation includes a physical exam along with a static and dynamic evaluation. The static exam includes palpation of the limbs and joints, evaluating the range of motion, muscle symmetry and hoof balance. The dynamic exam includes watching the horse travel, both in a straight line, on a lunge line and under tack along with the response to flexion of the joints. If necessary, additional diagnostics can include nerve and joint blocks, radiographs, and ultrasound.
